Chiropractic is a total and preventive approach to health, focusing on wellness rather than disease. Chiropractic is a total and preventive approach to health, focusing on wellness rather than disease. The chiropractic philosophy has been described as holistic, or wholistic, in that it treats the body as a whole - a network of complicated systems that can effect each other profoundly. A chiropractic prescription for health often includes chiropractic adjusting, physiotherapy, anti-inflammatory therapies, dietary changes, lifestyle modification, exercise, and stress reduction.

The chiropractic adjustment is one of the chiropractor's primary tools. Using this technique, the chiropractor gently and skillfully directs a specific force to restore normal range of motion to a joint which is being restricted by muscles or fibrous adhesions. Normal function is restored by eliminating abnormal nerve signals caused by the restriction. Once normal motion is restored, other body systems which have compensated for the problem can begin to return to normal. Chiropractic adjustment triggers the release of natural painkillers known as endorphins; and swelling, inflammation, and pain can reduce significantly after adjustment. A chiropractic adjustment may affect the body at some distance from the point of adjustment: chronic headaches, for example, may be relieved after an adjustment of the vertebrae of the neck or the lower back.
Because chiropractic's approach is conservative and designed to be as noninvasive as possible, it may take several adjustments on several days to restore balance.
